May reflection – You were born for such a time as this

Esther 4: 14

“For if you remain completely silent at this time, relief, and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. Yet who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”(NK JV)

You were born for such a time as this – Esther 4:14

The book of Esther is one of only two in the Bible named after women (the other is Ruth).

The biblical story is set during a time when the Jews suffered much racial hatred. They had been a minority in Persia for years.

There are four characters in the story :

King Xerxes:

who reigned in power at his palace in Susa, Persia. He had banished Queen Vashti. So, the search for another queen went out through the region.

Esther:

Who was taken from her home and came to live in the palace along with many other girls of the harem. She was Jewish but never revealed her nationality or family background, as Mordecai had advised her. God gave her great favor among all there, and she soon became queen.

Mordecai :

Mordecai  was a Jew and Esther’s older cousin. He had adopted and raised her after she lost her parents. He continued to advise Esther and check on her safety, even after she had been taken to live in the king’s palace. As a government official, he reported an assassination plot against the King and saved his life, which later caused the king to become aware of his loyalty and devotion.

Haman:

He was a descendant of King Agag, an enemy of the Jews. He was given a seat of honor by the King, but pride and lust for power drove him to hate any who would not bow down to him. When Mordecai refused, he sought revenge on all of God’s people by devising a plot to kill the Jews.

Our focus today is on Esther and how she hid to the clarion call to courageously rise for her people no matter the earthly consequences. She put her life at risk to save a nation.

What does it mean to Rise ?

To arise, means to be stirred up, to be awake and to prepare for action.

When the Lord tells you to arise in strength, He is simply asking you to get up, shake off the spirit of poverty, lack, or infirmity that had been dogging your steps and turn it into prosperity, blessings, and goodness.

Arise means to begin to occur or to exist : to come into being or to attention. Get with God every day. When we begin to understand how big and strong and able God is, then hope automatically comes.

Count your blessings. There is something compelling and profound that happens when we simply look for the surrounding good. Learn to seize the moments, as Esther did, today.

Esther was born for such a time as this. She was charged!

“If you persist in staying silent at a time like this, help and deliverance will arrive for the Jews from someplace else, but you and your family will be wiped out. Who knows? Maybe you were made queen for just such a time as this.” (Esther 4:14, MSG).

Dearly beloved, today God is saying to you; Before you were born, you were special to Me. I knew you before you were conceived in your mother’s womb. With my hands, I fearfully and wonderfully created every detail that makes you so unique. I know where you have been, where you are and where you are going.

Rise in strength, you are the apple of my eye. When trouble approaches, I will hide you in the shadow of my wings. I have even engraved you on the palms of my hands.

It is my love for you that makes you precious and honored in my sight.

Rise in strength, for I created you for my glory, and I will never abandon what l have formed and made.

My goodness and love will follow you every day of your life. So do not fret; I will fulfill my purpose for your life.

  1. To Rise in strength, we have to follow biblical guidelines: Be empowered by the word of God and don’t be silent. Speak the truth always. Esther, was empowered by the word of God; hence,  she arose in strength and confronted a situation. She refused to remain silent and put her life on the line for her people.
  2. To Rise in strength, we have to understand that God is the only One who has the power to turn trials into blessings.
  3. To Rise in strength, we must know that our prayers matter. Our voice matters. Our actions matter. And God is our Deliverer.
  4. We must be courageous. When we Rise in strength, God will give us the courage to do all that He asks us to do. God can bring great favor and blessing on our lives, even in hard places. He will always be faithful to lead us and to fight on our behalf.
  5. Beware of pride. Pride is a trap. Humility is key. Be humble. Be noble no matter the position of authority you find yourself.

Lastly, note that everything is about God and not us. Whatever places of leadership or positions of authority God has given us in life, one thing is true: It was never meant to be all about us.  Every part of our lives should point ultimately to God and His truth.

So do not fret, Rise in strength and God will fulfill his purpose in and for your life. Always remember…God’s love endures forever and ever!

Remain blessed.

Happy Easter from Girls’ Brigade International

As I drive around the Isle of Wight (an island on the southern tip of England), I am constantly reminded of the changing seasons.  Signs of spring are all around me – the countryside is coming to life – hedgerows are turning green, leaves and buds are appearing on trees, flowers are beginning to blossom, my rosebushes are going mad with new growth, lambs and calves are being born.  Also our roads are beginning to get busy as people are visiting the island for a holiday.

As we journey through ‘Holy Week’ we become aware of the sacrifice that Jesus made, the pain he endured and the love God has for each one of us that he gave his only son; that we may have life in all its fullness.  As we mourn his death on Good Friday we have the opportunity to look at our own individual lives and consider the things we could change, people we can apologise to and others that we can offer help to.  As a church we share ‘hot cross buns’ & coffee together with friends, family and the local community whilst reading the story of Easter.

On Easter Sunday as we learn of the resurrection of Jesus, we are reminded how awesome our God is!  Everything that was foretold by the prophets came true on that day. We are born again in God’s love and freed from all our transgressions – we are given new life – amazing grace!  Once again we all come together for early morning breakfast and communion.  We follow this up with Sunday morning worship. Alleluia, Christ the Lord is risen today!  I pray that you are all able to enjoy your local traditions to celebrate this amazing gift!

I hope the pictures help you follow the Easter story. A friend of mine designed them for display at church.  The crosses on the hill are erected every Easter by a local landowner as a reminder to us all how blessed we are by our father’s love that he sacrificed his sons to forgive our sins.

May God bless you all and your families as we continue our journey together.

New year, new hope, new beginnings

REFLECTION OF 2022:   We are grateful and thankful for God’s faithfulness in 2022.   For seven months, we connected in a new way for our 13th ICGB 2022. We had workshops, games and most of all we prayed together. Thank you, GB Jamaica and Caribbean and Americas fellowship, under the leadership of IVP Quindell Ferguson for hosting our first ever Online ICGB! It was an experience I enjoyed and was blessed every minute we were together. The Zoom events were not without their challenges, but we do thank God because every event was successful regardless. Thank you to all those who took time to be part of this historic ICGB.

May I take this opportunity to thank the GB Worldwide family for giving me another chance to serve as International President. I am humbled and do not take it for granted. Recognising that the IPC is challenged to ensure that The Girls Brigade remains relevant in a post COVID world and to Generation Z, I pray that God will guide us and speak to us to take on the Tusk.

Our theme for 2023 is Rise In Strength…for such a time as this.  The Road map ahead will not be easy. Our world has changed. We need to recognise and appreciate the unique position of The Girls Brigade. We are deeply rooted in the communities, and we are a globally connected body. We have been working with girls for 129 years! However, we must not remain Static. Let us Rise in His Strength, John 3:30 and build the Kingdom.

Let us all work and pray together to raise the GBI profile as a loud global voice for the girl child… GB the advocate.

This calls for commitment on each and every one of us. God has placed us wherever we are, for such a time as this. Please share your dreams for GB. Let us hear your voices as together we can. IPC will create platforms for sharing, please participate. Watch out on our social media!

We cannot rise in our own strength and be successful. Esther 4:14 “For who knows, but you have come to your royal position for such a time as this”.  These words invoke courage and hope in all believers. These words inspire us to answer the call to make a difference! Just like Esther did in her time. We have the opportunity as GB members to raise a whole new generation of Esthers.  Who will face their challenges head on, who recognise that they can do all things through Christ.

We will all face times of fear or doubt. We need to always remember, our faithful God is there and He has been with us all along, and He will continue to guide and protect us. “For such a time as this” shows God’s providence, whether we hesitate or move forward in His strength. He works all things together to fulfil His purpose.

So, my dear sisters, as we begin 2023 with all its insecurities and mysteries, (God Knows!) … I urge you to continue trusting God, “at such a time as this”, right now – right here. Right where you are – trust Him.
