The Girls’ Brigade International was brought together from three separate Christian missions.
We work in over 50 countries, spanning cultures, continents, languages, uniforms and even generations.
However different the work of The Girls’ Brigade looks across the world, we share the same principles and we’re united under one badge and one motto.
Our Badge
The badge of The Girls’ Brigade was created in 1964 when the organisation came together for the first time. It’s composed of elements of the original Girls’ Brigade Ireland, The Girls’ Guidry, and The Girls’ Life Brigade.
Each element of the badge represents something.
- The Celtic cross is a symbol of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We’re proud to be the world’s oldest and largest Christian organisation serving girls. The cross is the foundation of our faith and inspires our mission to girls around the world. The unique shape of the Celtic cross was chosen because it comes from Ireland, where everything started with Margaret Lyttle’s first Girls’ Brigade group.
- The lamp was taken from The Girls’ Guidry. In the Bible, Jesus is called ‘the light of the world.’ The lamp represents the way that Jesus shows us the way and offers us a new perspective on things that seem dark or confusing. It’s also our hope that, through our work, we can show God’s love and provide light to our communities.
- The crown is from The Girls’ Life Brigade. It symbolises God ruling over His kingdom in a spirit of love, hope and restoration.
- The flame was added to the logo when The Girls’ Brigade came together. It symbolises passion and strength. In the Bible, God’s spirit is compared to a fire burning within us. It gives us the power to live as God intended and to bring the Good News of His transformative love and hope to the world.
- Finally, the badge is a circle. This shape represents God’s unending, unbreakable and everlasting love for His people.
Our Motto
Our motto is simple: Seek, Serve and Follow Christ.
In The Girls’ Brigade, we want to seek God in everything we do, serve Him by living as He intended, and follow Him as He calls us to every corner of the world.
Our Mission and Principles
The Girls’ Brigade is called to serve girls because God cares about girls. The ways in which we serve may look different, but we share the same values.
Our mission is to help girls to become followers of Jesus Christ and to find true enrichment in life through self-control, reverence and a sense of responsibility.
Our organisation:
- Acknowledges Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord according to the Scriptures
- Seeks to fulfil its aim to the Glory of One God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit
- Witnesses to the standard set by Jesus Christ and gives positive teaching on the Christian attitude to life
- Promotes a just society where all people are equally valued.
