Reflections

July 2025 reflection

Soar like an eagle is a powerful metaphor that encapsulates themes of freedom, aspiration and resilience. To reflect on this phrase, we can consider various dimensions in which it resonates with our lives.

Embracing freedom
Galatians 5:1 says, “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.”
Eagles, often seen as symbols of freedom, glide effortlessly through the sky, unbound by the earthly constraints that govern many creatures. Similarly, this phrase encourages us to seek our own freedom in Christ – freedom from self-doubt, fear and societal expectations. It prompts us to break away from our limitations, encouraging an outlook where we pursue passions and dreams with vigour.

Aspiration and ambition
1 Thessalonians 4:11-12 says, “make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands, just as we told you, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.”
The image of soaring suggests a sense of ambition and the desire to rise above challenges. Just as eagles ascend to great heights, we too can strive to elevate ourselves, pushing beyond our comfort zones to achieve our goals. This heightening of perspective allows us to see the world differently, gaining insight and wisdom from God. Our aspirations and ambitions must align with God’s purpose.

Resilience and strength
Philippians 4:13 says, “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”
Eagles are known for their strength, both in their physical prowess and in their tenacity to overcome obstacles. Reflecting on this aspect, the Bible has already confirmed that nothing is impossible to achieve because we belong to God. He gives us strength and we can find inspiration in our own struggles. To soar like an eagle means to confront difficulties with courage and resolve, understanding that challenges can be stepping stones to greater achievements.

Perspective and vision
Proverbs 29:18 tells us that “where there is no vision, the people perish”
Eagles have exceptional vision, allowing them to see far and wide from their lofty perches. This aspect reminds us of the importance of maintaining a broader perspective in life. By rising above our immediate circumstances, we can gain clarity about our goals, relationships, and the world around us. It also encourages us to be intentional about everything we do and reflect on our progress, recognising how far we have come and how we’ve overcome past challenges. Habakkuk 2:2-3 encourages us to write down our vision for it to be understood and acted upon.

Connection to nature
Finally, the eagle’s flight can also evoke a deep appreciation for the natural world. Just as the eagle is a part of the ecosystem, we too are connected to our environment. Reflecting on this connection inspires us to foster harmony with nature and to recognise the impact of our actions on the world. We should also engage in physical activities like regular exercise which helps us build stamina and mental toughness and increase our connection.

In summary, soar like an eagle invites us to embrace freedom, seek elevation in our aspirations, cultivate resilience in facing challenges, build our confidence, challenge ourselves and maintain a broad perspective. It serves as a call to rise above our limitations, encouraging us to aim high in our personal and professional lives while nurturing a deep connection to God, who never fails us, according to Joshua 1:9
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
