Soaring on Eagles’ Wings – A Spiritual Approach to Mental Health
As we try to use the eagles in Isaiah 40 as a comfort for Girls’ Brigade in a time of weariness and struggle, our matchless Creator and Sustainer gives us his strength and glory, filling us with the capacity to do far more than we think is possible.
Mindfulness has entered the mainstream in recent times, but we still think of it more as meditation practice than a way of living.
We may feel weak and powerless in our current circumstances, but because of who we are in Christ, we can hold on to the promise that in his strength we will “soar on wings like eagles.”
Lord God, renew our strength each day so that we may reflect on your glory so “Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles. . .” Isaiah 40:31
As we use our theme of “rise in strength; soar like an eagle” to focus on mental health we will take a spiritual approach to practices, mindfulness, and adopting an eagle-like focus and attitude. This involves using meditation, prayer, and community to gain spiritual strength; the eagle’s sharp focus to concentrate on our goals and positive relationships while minimising negative influences. Recognise that there are more ways you can discover and that there is no such thing as myself in isolation – we are all part of something bigger.
To cultivate inner strength through mindfulness and faith we need to:
- Engage in spiritual practices: Dedicate time to prayer and meditation to foster a sense of inner peace and divine support, which can improve mental well-being and resilience.
- Use scripture as an anchor: Re-read uplifting passages like Isaiah 40:31 to find comfort and the belief that you are not alone during difficult times.
- Practice affirmations: Use self-affirmations to reinforce a positive and resilient mindset, aligning your thoughts with your goals. (Philippians 4:13)
To adopt the eagle’s focus and perspective:
- Focus on your goals: Just as an eagle has a sharp and precise vision, focus on your goals and eliminate distractions. Stay locked in on what you want to achieve until you grasp it. (Proverbs 15:22)
- Embrace a positive attitude: Nurture a positive mindset as this is crucial for motivation and growth. A strong, positive attitude can elevate you even with limited education or other resources. (Philippians 4:6-8)
- Surround yourself with positivity: Limit interactions with negative influences and instead seek out supportive people who inspire and motivate you to soar. (Proverbs 13:20)
To Nurture your mind and body:
- Combine mental and physical renewal: Realise that strength is holistic. Nourish your body through healthy choices and exercise, find activities that strengthen both your mind and body. (Ephesians 4:32)
- Embrace vulnerability: Recognise that vulnerability can be a strength. Be authentic in your
experiences, as this can lead to healing and a stronger sense of self. (Galatians 6:2)
- Build a supportive community: Connect with others in supportive communities, whether in person or online, to share experiences and find encouragement on your journey to renewal. (Hebrews 10:24-25)
- Reframe your thoughts: When you face a setback, instead of asking, “Why is this happening to me?” try asking, “What can I learn from this?” This reframing shifts your perspective from helplessness to empowerment. (Philippians 4:8)
- Connect with a higher purpose: Find activities that give you a sense of meaning beyond your immediate troubles. This could be volunteering, helping a friend, or connecting with your spirituality. (Matthew 6:33)
