A reflection on the aim of The Girls’ Brigade

The Girls’ Brigade is a voluntary Christian movement with a noble aim, “To help girls become true followers of our Lord Jesus Christ, through reverence, self-control and a sense of responsibility to find true enrichment of life based on John 10:10

The aim is rooted in the four-square program of the Girls’ Brigade – service, spiritual, education and physical – a holistic development of the girl child. We are committed to helping girls and young women discover their worth and purpose in Christ by providing a safe and nurturing environment where girls are taught the word of God. They explore their faith, build meaningful relationships and develop a sense of belonging through various spiritual activities like Bible studies, Bible games, talks, prayer etc. All of this empowers girls to be active fellowers of Jesus Christ and this helps them to live out their faith in practical ways.

In the Girls’ Brigade, girls and young women are guided on how to develop a deep respect and awe of God, others and themselves. We facilitate this through engagement in worship services, encouraging self-reflection, emphasising humility and teaching them to acknowledge their strengths and weaknesses. This teaching helps them to understand the importance of reverence in our daily lives and make meaningful and important decisions.

Self-control is an important life skill which makes it a vital part of our aim, by helping girls to:

  • Set clear goals and priorities
  • Practice self-awareness and recognise triggers
  • Develop coping skills and strategies
  • Learn how to manage emotions and impulses
  • Build resilience and perseverance
  • Cultivate healthy habits and routines
  • Surround themselves with positive influences
  • Practice mindfulness and meditation
  • Seek support from mentors or role models
  • Embrace challenges and learn from them
  • Use positive self-talk
  • Take responsibility for actions
  • Set boundaries
  • Prioritise self-care
  • Stay accountable
  • Learn to say “no”
  • Develop problem-solving skills.

Our girls and young women become more confident, compassionate and capable individuals, positively impacting their own life and the lives of those around them.

The sense of responsibility that the Girls’ Brigade instills in its members is a vital aspect of its aim.  This is achieved by:

  • Involving girls in community service, leadership opportunities, and team-building activities
  • Giving out tasks that match age and ability
  • Encouraging them to establish clear goals, set deadlines and encouraging them to take ownership. Helping them to prioritise tasks, manage time effectively, and meet deadlines
  • Encouraging them to view failures and mistakes as opportunities for growth and learning
  • Holding them accountable for their actions, offering constructive feedback and appropriate consequences
  • Teaching the value of contributing to others and being good stewards of our God given resources
  • Educating them on budgeting, saving and responsible spending. We help them develop a sense of ownership and accountability for their faith. This, in turn, enables them to become positive influencers in their families, communities and the world at large.

The enrichment of life is another critical component of the Girls’ Brigade’s aim. By providing opportunities for girls to learn new skills, explore their creativity, and develop their talents, the organisation helps them become well-rounded and purpose-driven individuals. Whether it’s through arts, crafts, sports or leadership training, the Girls’ Brigade offers a holistic approach to personal growth and development.

Ultimately, our aim is to inspire girls and young women to become the best version of themselves, rooted in their faith and empowered to make a difference in the world. By serving, helping and enriching the lives of girls and young women, we play a vital role in shaping the next generation of leaders, change-makers, and disciples of Jesus Christ.  My prayer is that as we work in our various capacities and levels, we aspire to live out the values embodied in our aim.
